Devin Braune has won his third consecutive World eX title – but not quite as expected.
Due to the strong slipstream effect at Daytona, Braune’s rivals hoped they had a real chance of posing a threat to the defending champion in the Super Final. But even before the starting lights turned from red to green, the championship was practically decided when six (!) of the 16 drivers jumped the start – including the champion’s three closest rivals: Jarno Wiese, Julius Martin and Chris Overend.
All three, along with Robin Hay, Bodo Kräling and Rui Cabeda, had to serve drive-through penalties and were thus out of contention for the top spots. Nevertheless, Braune battled with Wiese and Martin for the lead in the early laps without risking too much. But after the two turned into the pit lane to serve their drive-through penalties, the German had a huge lead, which he only had to manage until the finish.
Second place in the Super Final went to Steffen Walter, who made a huge leap forward in the championship from sixth to third place – just one point ahead of Julius Martin, who was on his way up after his drive-through penalty in tandem with Jarno Wiese, but then collided with Frank Enger in the bus stop chicane and lost further crucial seconds, eventually finishing 9th.
Former RCCO slot car champion Björn Skottke finished third. He was under massive pressure from Luke Pound in the final stages but managed to defend his unexpected podium position to the finish.
Devin Braune’s teammate Callum Cripps fought his way up to fifth place after sliding off the track on the opening lap following contact with his British compatriot Chris Overend and spinning again a few laps later at the very same spot.
Jennifer Schamey achieved the best result of her World eX career so far with sixth place after a fierce battle with Thomas Voigt. Following contact between the two in the chicane, Voigt fell behind Jarno Wiese shortly before the end of the race.
Julius Martin and Patrick Winzenick completed the top ten at Daytona.
“It was a fun season,” said the new and old World Champion. “It was the busiest season we’ve had. I think, we’ve never had that many drivers on the grid, we never had that many drivers who were actually competitive either. If that trend continues then next season basically the whole grid will be within a second and that will be very tough to win.”
