Wiese beats Cripps in photo finish

Jarno Wiese scored his maiden win of the 2025 World eX Season beating Callum Cripps in a photo finish in the Sprint at Silverstone.

Round 8 of the 2025 RCCO World eX Championship marked a thrilling close to the regular season before the Super Final at Daytona. For the first time in World eX history, the venue was decided by a draw on race day – Silverstone beating out Spa-Francorchamps and the Red Bull Ring. The uncertainty set the stage for an action-packed event. 17 drivers, the largest grid of the season, took to the track for what proved to be two eventful races.

Defending champion Devin Braune once again demonstrated why he leads the World Championship standings. He claimed an impressive seventh pole position of the season, nearly one second ahead of his Rocket Simsport teammate Callum Cripps and German karting prodigy Jarno Wiese. The reverse-grid Sprint, however, would not go as smoothly for the title favourite. A rare mistake at Stowe on the first lap and contact with Björn Skottke on the next sent Braune tumbling down the order. Yet he fought back from 13th to finish fourth – his first event of the season without a podium.

Julius Martin passed early leader Bodo Kräling on lap one and looked on course to his first victory of the season before being caught by Cripps and Wiese on lap five before spinning at the exit of Stowe. He was able to rejoin in third position but was out of contention for the Sprint victory.

In a spectacular duel, Cripps and Wiese traded the lead over the final two laps, finishing just 96 thousandths of a second apart with Wiese scoring his second victory in World eX. Martin, Braune and Robin Hay completed the top five.

The Feature Race delivered just as much drama. As the lights went out, frontrow starter Callum Cripps stalled and chaos erupted behind him as Steffen Walter and Julius Martin could not avoid him.

Cripps recovered to finish sixth, but the Feature Race ultimately belonged to his teammate Devon Braune. The World Champion dominated the race from start to finish, securing his 50th World eX series win with a commanding twelve-second lead over Jarno Wiese. Chris Overend completed the podium after a disappointing Sprint ahead of Robin Hay, Julius Martin, and Cripps. The race was characterized by relentless on-track battles and several incidents that kept Race Control busy, capping off Silverstone’s reputation as one of (sim) racing’s most challenging race tracks.

With the regular season now concluded, the stage is set for the Super Final at Daytona on November 4. Devin Braune and Jarno Wiese will share the front row of the grid.

As part of the Silverstone event, the World eX community enjoyed an insightful Bizz Talk with Alexander Uelhoff, CEO of STEM Racing Germany. Uelhoff introduced the concept behind STEM Racing – formerly known as Formula 1 in Schools – and shared experiences from the recent World Finals in Singapore, where Germany finished second behind Australia.
